Top Ten 80s TV Themes - Number 5

And now we return to the countdown...

Sometimes the old favorites have achieved their acclaim for a reason.  The Golden Girls' "Thank You For Being a Friend" is a prime example of a simple, catchy tune mixed with straight forward, properly rhyming lyrics creating an undeniably memorable tune.  The quick piano introduces us right into the opening, titular line. And from there the little ditty is mostly a lyrically driven piece accented by the occasional piano run between verses.

The beauty of this theme is how it so perfectly matches the feel of the show itself.  It sounds like anyone of the main characters could be singing this song to one another.  Of course the irony is that Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche were not long-time friends but almost-septuagenarians thrust together by answering an ad at the local grocery.  Joined by Dorothy's mom Sophia, the ladies created a lasting friendship between themselves well after "the prime" of their lives.

Though I am praising the song for its catchiness and memorability, I must bring up that I always had an issue with the presumptuousness of the second verse, namely that if a party were thrown by the "friend" then the singer would provide her with the greatest gift given at that party simply by thanking her for "being a friend."  Now I am not one opposed to sentimentality, but how ridiculous is that? You're telling me no one is going to get the party thrower a nice gift certificate or maybe a new scarf? The best gift at this thing is a card? Obviously the singer thinks a little too highly of herself and needs to gain some humility.

Aside from that slight nitpick, this theme just offers something for everyone - sort of like The Golden Girls itself.  I don't think there was any other show that both my Granny and I could watch and actually enjoy together (maybe Wheel of Fortune).  It's catchy, short, and memorable. Thank you "Thank You For Being a Friend."

  2. You heard the song wrong, it says the greatest gift would be from [the singer] and the card ATTACHED would say "Thank you for being a friend." So the singer is giving a gift and a card together.

  3. Yeah, though the time said 11:30am this thing was written at like 3:00am so I was really dwelling on a little thing that I completely zoned out on. I listened to the damn song about 12 times and kept thinking the woman singing was just giving a card. Of course the next morning I realized the mistake - but oh well. Thanks for checking out the blog.
