Porn Parody Profile - 30 Rock

For our third installment of the Porn Parody Profile, we're going to be tackling the 30 Rock XXX Parody trailer.  I must say that I may have made a mistake in reviewing this one so soon into the feature as it is outstanding and there may be nowhere to go but down.  Check out the trailer and my review after the jump.



Where do I start? Throughout the trailer a score very reminiscent of 30 Rock's own is constantly playing, recreating the feel of the actual show quite well.    It helps that 30 Rock's own theme doesn't have any actual lyrics (aside from some scatting and vamping) but more reflects the big band sound of the 30s.  


From the beginning of the trailer, we know we're in for something special. And then we hear a voice that sounds strikingly similar to Alec Baldwin's.  Herschel Savage's portrayal of the "Jack Donaghy" character of this parody is spot-on.  Though he doesn't quite resemble Baldwin, he nails the voice and projects the older, powerful boss that serves as the counterpart to the mousy, less self-assured "Liz Lemon" (or Limon in this case) character.


The other comic star of this trailer is Bishop playing the "Tracy Jordan" character - the character played by and partially based on Tracy Morgan.  He also looks nothing like his counterpart but crushes the impersonation by channeling the inane, insane ramblings of the over-medicated and under-educated* "Tracy Jordan".
* I realize Tracy has been show to be far more worldly on some subject than many would believe.  Still, I feel under-educated is a proper characterization.


What Else Did I Like?

• "You see this chain? It was Dracula's"
• Ashlynn Brooke - the Lou Gehrig of XXX Porn Parodies - makes her appearance as the "Jenna Maloney" character (portrayed on the show by Jane Krakowski).  I'm pretty sure the "black to the future" scene was actually pulled directly from an episode of 30 Rock, but she still made me laugh so it's in the pro's column. (The random, "holy shit" helped).
• The Kenneth character makes a brief appearance in the trailer as well and does a fun job imitating Jack McBrayer's delivery.
• The fact that I think they could have gotten Judah Friedlander to play his role for free instead of casting a look alike. Though I must say that the "Boner" hat was a nice, nice touch.

Not So Much

• I don't know what it is about these parodies, but they fail completely when trying to cast a character who is bald.  Instead of finding a balding, older porn star who's down on his luck; they tend to go for a young guy in a bald cap.  Here we find the "Pete" character to resemble Larry Fine with thinning hair more than anything. And quite frankly, it's a little scary to see.
• Additionally, the Peanuts-esque speaking while "Pete" is checking out the body of Amy Ried isn't funny and actually feels hammy compared to the rest of the humorous trailer.
• Finally, not a big fan of Lisa Ann playing Liz Lemon.  You could have found any brunette and thrown some glasses on her and been close enough on looks to satiate the Tina Fey fan boys out there.  But to really parody 30 Rock you need to find some porn star that can at least channel 1/10th of Fey's sarcasm and self-deprecation.  Lisa Ann is not the chosen one for that job.

Aside from those small nitpicks, this trailer was outstanding and has me looking forward to see what else the New Sensations crew has up their sleeve.
