Top 10 90s TV Theme Song #8 “Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs” from Frasier.
Using all of four instruments and the dulcet tones of star Kelsey Grammar, “Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs” is a testament to the “less is more” philosophy. The driving base and percussion work evoke memories of sitting in a small jazz club of yesteryear, leaning back with a nice bourbon, and letting yourself melt into the night.
Though there are many interpretations to the theme out there; here's my take. In the song, Grammar (very much in character as Dr. Frasier Crane) laments the many phone calls he receives from troubled callers every day at work - not to mention Frasier's own family and friends. There's lots of mixed up people out there (tossed salad and scrambled eggs) who all have their issues and lay them at Frasier's feet. But Frasier, too, is a "bit confused" with life. He is no better than his patients really, constantly struggling with both his love life and family life. Still, these problems in his own life won't keep him from doing his job well ("I've got you pegged."). Frasier, as far back as Cheers, was always a professional. His own issues won't prevent him from being a great adviser to others. Of course, once he fixes the issues of one person, there is more "tossed salad and scrambled eggs" to worry about, continuing the cycle.
It's interesting that the theme for the show typically only played during the end credits and not at the beginning. Instead, the beginning of each episode featured a short intro based around the theme.
Even still, it seems that everyone who watched TV in the 90s could recall how great a theme Frasier had. It's simple. It tells the story of the entire show in a creative way. And somehow it successfully features the lead actor of the show singing in a way that doesn't come across a overly self-indulgent. Win all around for "Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs."
A Frasier "Your Comedy Moment" coming later in the day.
