Top Ten 90s TV Themes - Number 7

What can I say? I’m a sucker for really cheesy themes, and there is no theme cheesier than our number seven pick.

Top 10 90s TV Theme Song #7 “I’m Always Here” by Jimi Jamison from Baywatch.

Mixing some great, really descriptive lyrics with Phil Collins-lite drum beats; the Baywatch theme is just so over-the-top that you have no choice but to give yourself over to it.  Even on your first listen, you’ll find yourself singing the chorus before the last swimsuit-clad actress runs across your screen.  And don’t think I’m forgetting the bad-ass synthesizer solo about midway through the song.  Taken straight from 1984, the solo is horribly out of place on a show that thrived in the mid 90s but dammit if it doesn’t work outstandingly.

Of course, much like on Friends, the theme song that helped create some of the hoopla around the show was not the first theme.  Also cheesy, but nowhere near as memorable, “Save Me” by Peter Cetera provided the backing for the original Baywatch opening. Thankfully, NBC cancelled the first season of Baywatch allowing Hasselhoff to bring the show to syndication and replace “Save Me” with the song we’re celebrating today.

Honestly, the hardest part about posting this particular theme song was making a choice as to which season to feature.  I’ve always been a big Nicole Eggert fan, so I was leaning towards one of the earlier seasons; but the pull of Yasmine Bleeth and Gina Lee Nolin was too strong.  Still, for the Eggerterians our there, here’s Season 3’s intro (with crazy German no less).

The Baywatch theme is cheesy, over-produced, and somehow timeless.  If you can’t appreciate this song then I weep for you.  Now, for a stirring conclusion, here’s some gratuitous shots from my favorite women on Baywatch.
