Top Ten 90s TV Themes - Honorable Mention Pt. 1

Due to the overwhelming success of our first television themes countdown, I’ve decided to go back to the well for more public adoration.  This time the focus will be on the decade of prosperity, presidential promiscuity, and productivity – the 1990s.  So, get out your DayGlo t-shirts, strap on some British Knights, and maybe bring some flannel because it may get cold before we’re done.

However, before we can get to the official countdown, I wanted to share with you the first part of the honorable mention, the television themes that – while quite good – were just not good enough to make it on the list.

A Different World - Pretty much including this one for three reasons: the opening guitar lick, Sinbad, and Kadeem Hardison's glasses.

Blossom - To be honest, I hated this show. HATED it with a fiery passion.  Still, I would refrain from turning NBC off until after watching this intro. Performed by Dr. John, and featuring the word "opinionation" in place of "opinion," the Blossom theme remains the shows only lasting legacy (that and "WOAH!").

Silk Stalkings - Calling to mind the best parts of Phil Collins' solo work, the drum beats and guitar riffs that punctuate this tune are reason enough to place it on the honorable mention list.  Add in the gratuitous, exploitative "scenery" and you have a theme on the cusp of the Top 10.

Mad About You - What is it about Paul Reiser and catchy television themes?  I'm pretty sure there is a longer version than what's featured in the video below, but you're still able to feel the jazzy goodness of this theme in this truncated form.

Northern Exposure - The final theme feature in our first honorable mention.  Always put a smile on my face.

  1. The opening beat to Northern Exposure reminds me of Treme . . . I was addicted to Northern Exposure . . . so much so that to this day I will still sit down and watch a show if one of the Northern Exposure actors is on the screen . . . Speaking of I will give "The Whole Truth" a shot as not only is Rob Morrow in it but one of my other all time favorite actresses is in it also, Maura Tierney of News Radio (oh and that little show ER)

  2. Yeah, the Treme theme is definitely a unique one too. I guess I hear "Do Whatcha You Wanna" more than anything else in that one though.

Still, it's a shame Northern Exposure is not shown on TV anymore. I sort of fell in love with it after it originally aired and would make a point to watch it were TV Land or Nick at Nite able to pick it up.

I'll probably watch "The Whole Truth" too. Maura Tierney was the reason I was looking forward to "Parenthood" so I'll gladly wait to see her on this show instead.
