Psych Season Five

As was mentioned in the summer preview, Psych starts its fifth season tonight at 9pm ct on the USA Network.  Here's a promo from last year that makes me crack up every time I see it.

For those who have yet to board the Psych train, the show follows Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his buddy Burton "Gus" Guster (Dule Hill) who run their own "psychic detective agency." Though Spencer is not actually a psychic, he is able to perpetuate this persona because of his keen observational skills gained in his youth under the dutiful eye of his policeman father (Corbin Bernsen).   In addition to his freelance detective agency, Spencer and Gus are often called in to do consultant work for the Santa Barbara Police Department - most often assisting "Lassie" (the hilarious, deadpan Timothy Omundson) and Jules (Roday's real-life fiance Maggie Lawson).

Though Psych usually offers a unique, if sometimes unsatisfying, mystery every week; the show achieves its greatest success through the chemistry between the main leads.  Roday and Hill especially have a timing and rapport that brings to mind classic comedy pairings in years past like Abbott and Costello or Gleason and Carney.  The quick wit and fast talking between the two of them never fails to bring a smile to my face.

If you're a fan of good, solid comedy and light mystery, give Psych a try.  Though there is a series continuity to follow, it is rather loosely referenced and not an impediment to joining the show in progress.
