Though Cheers finished its initial run on the air before I turned ten years old, I do have memories of sitting down and watching the show with my parents. Off the top of my head, I remember Woody, Cliff and Norm, hot Kirstie Alley, and - most of all - that iconic theme song. That's one reason I thought it was an odd choice that this video didn't even attempt to throw a parody of the Cheers theme on there. Such a memorable tune deserves a poor porn parody version.* However, I guess they get a few points for trying to create that painted effect from the intro.
* Here's a great parody version from the Simpsons
Thankfully, the trailer looks excellent after that fact. From the high hair wig the Sam Malone character is rocking to the ridiculous, shoulder padded getup the Norm character is wearing; the unintentional comedy level greatly exceeds the intended comedy of the movie itself. Extra points for the Cliff Clavin wannabe who not only nailed the quick, meandering rant but closely mimicked John Ratzenberger delivery as well.
The setup of the bar itself may have been what impressed me the most. It may not have been able to have the great detail of the Cheers set, but not too bad on the g-string budget of a porno. The stairway to the upstairs (street level) restaurant in the background was nice touch especially. I've been very happy to see that the director of these parodies at least takes the time to get the feel for the original shows down.
Other positives
- Classic Sam Malone, "Not the hair" line.
- The Lilith casting. Always had a thing for Bebe Neuwirth and felt the original show did a great job casting a "secretly" good looking woman to play Frasier's wife.
- Woody isn't featured too much in the trailer, but he appears to pull off the goofy just fine.
Negatives
- FRASIER. This guy cast to be Frasier just plain bugs me. First, you have that ridiculous hair in the first scene. He looks less like Kelsey Grammar and more like the animated Wily Wonka on Wonka brand candies. Secondly, this guy doesn't have half the gravitas of Kelsey Grammar. Frasier was always an odd bird of the show, but he was still inherently likable. This guy seems to have channeled all the douche and none of the dude.
- Carla. No zing or real bite to her quips in this trailer. Its odd when the character from the network television version has more vitriol in her putdowns.
That's it for now as I've already rambled on far too long. Next Tuesday: 30 Rock the XXX Porn Parody.
