Taking a break from the countdown to delve into the depths of Doug, the story of an annoying young boy, Doug Funnie, living in Bluffington, his annoying dog Porkchop, and his really annoying best friend Skeeter Valentine. Oh wait did I forget his annoying crush Patti Mayonnaise? Or what about that annoying rich girl Beebe Bluff? The annoying assistant principal Bone? God, looking back at it, the only one on the show who was actually funny was Roget Klotz – the class jerk and main antagonist of Doug. Which begs the question – why did I watch this show?
Clearly, I watched Doug because it had an odd sense of fantasy running throughout most every episode. Doug, much like myself, would envision these crazy, ridiculous scenarios where by he ended up being the savior of the day – winning the prize, finding the stolen goods, getting the girl – whatever. In my adolescent stage this type of mindset and imagination seemed like something to be encouraged and embraced. In retrospect… Doug was a crazy p*ssy. Doubt it? Check out this awesome blog I stumbled across that breaks down – in painstaking detail – just how weird Doug was.
And what about "Skeeter," Doug's best friend? WHO NAMES THEIR CHILD MOSQUITO? I understand that the African American race (I know he was blue in the show, but Skeeter was clearly "black" right?) gives their children unusual names but COME ON! Skeeter was out of control always honking around, twitching like he was tweaking for another fix. And let's face it, the only reason Beebe Bluff ever pretended to date the kid was to stick it to daddy. Unlike Doug, I hated Skeeter as a kid and time away from the show has further incubated that hatred.
Plus you have Porkchop - the dog who would have been so much better if he actually were euthanized and turned into a pork chop. He seemed like that idiot you'll see at a bar who just "knows" he's the coolest person in the room and acts accordingly. You know, the guy you want to cut with a freshly broken beer bottle as the rest of the room cheers you on. Forget that dog.

Of course, it isn’t all bad. Remember the Beets? Here’s a reminder:

Yeah now you do. And thank Doug for those great tunes.
Additionally, in retrospect, how could you not love Roger Klotz?
This kid was a truant living in a trailer park who actually had amazing artistic abilities both in music and painting. He often acted out because of his difficult circumstances and well-to-do Doug took it upon himself to demonize the guy. Fortunately, once Doug made the jump to Disney, Roger’s family was blessed by falling ass-backwards into money. And suddenly, surprise surprise, Doug didn’t quite think so negatively of him. God bless you Roger Klotz, you are the saving grace of this show.
Wow, reading over this little write-up, I may have some rage issues I need to address. Even still, I enjoyed taking a look back at a show that I definitely feel differently about now.

The theme song was annoying too....
ReplyDeleteI like that you proactively address the rage issue in this post.
