What did I think was groovy?
- The set design for the entire parody was quite good. “New Sensations” really knocked this one out of the park when it came to recreating the Forman kitchen, Eric’s bedroom, and the basement. I almost think they set the bar too high in some of their parodies that future ones will inherently suffer. Still, I always enjoy seeing quality set craftsmanship.
- The feel of That 70s Show is recreated nearly flawlessly as well. The transitions between scenes with characters dancing, the various driving in the car cuts from the opening credits, and the obnoxious laugh track all recall what That 70s Show seemed to be all about. I would have liked a “woooooo” from the audience when the characters went to kiss though, that’s classic sitcom fare.
- What can I say about the Fez character? I mean, I think the actor playing him has to be at least 45 which begs the question, “was there no other porn actor of brown skinned color that was available for this shoot?” But Pike Nelson seems to play it straight, not acknowledging how absurd he looks the entire time, and he nails the Fez voice. I think they could make a parody video just with this guy, and they’d have a real winner on their hands. I also like the way he says, “oh, my rock star, left-over tacos.”
- Ashlynn Brooke again gets a mention for her ability to show up in each of those videos with new wigs of varying quality. Here, she does a pretty good Laurie Forman impression (which basically just requires the girl to be rude and bitchy). She also looks good in a tube top.
What harshed my buzz?
- The dimmed film may have made it appear more like a 70s porno, which is an interesting decision in and of itself, but it actually detracts from the feel of recreating That 70s Show. I would have preferred a filter-less approach to the filming that didn't reduce the light so much.
- “Red” and “Kitty,” though not featured heavily in the trailer, are absolutely horrible. If Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp were dead, they’d be rolling over in their graves about their porn counterparts. Both Steve Smith and Rachel Love lack the loving, combative nature that the Forman parents often exhibited. Additionally, they lack the fiery delivery that could often create hilarious results. New Sensations really blew it on casting those two.
- Much like in the real show, the “Kelso” character only annoyed me and caused me to involuntarily make a fist with my right hand. I guess he nailed the douchiness of Ashton Kutcher, but I still can’t enjoy him in the video. They needed to feature “Hyde” and “Jackie” more and curb the “Kelso.”
